ARTIST PROFILE
Michele Coleman
Michele Coleman is a theatre director, playwright and arts educator who has directed professionally in Toronto, Philadelphia and New York City. Michele sees theatre as a powerful outlet for alternative ways of communication and education. Her play Finding My Voice confronts issues of bullying, intolerance and diverse cultural ancestry within a Canadian community. Way Out There is a comic play inspired by our fascination with the solar system. Both of these plays were developed with students from Brown Public School and through her creative process, students learn about history, culture and empowerment while they create a theatrical production. Michele believes theatre creates community, strengthens a student’s ability to focus and offers them a sense of independence while encouraging freedom of expression. Currently, Michele is writing a musical about aviation and working toward re-mounting her play about artist Eva Hesse. Michele is heading into her third year with AFCY and has been thoroughly enjoying teaching students about clown, commedia dell’arte, musical theatre and focusing on the creation of new work.
