ARTIST PROFILE

Mark Sepic

I always liked inventing as a kid, playing kitchen music, etc., so it just grew, as a therapeutic escape from showbiz. Now it has a life of it’s own, especially the eco - redemption aspect. I hope to help the world, and our reputation as a green country; of course, we need oil and money, but we’re also the land of the silver birch and home of the beaver!

This brief statement and the video links below give perspective on the work and eco-music mission.
The Junkestra: Using recycled pots, pans, brake drums, bath tubs, sinks and random bits of trash - arranged in standard, even-tempered tuning, it opens doors of musical discovery. For musicians – this is a delightful adventure and a vehicle for high level improvisation and composition. For non-musicians, this is an inviting, non-threatening jam – as the right notes sound “different” and the wrong notes sound beautiful. It sounds so strange that everything sounds right. Other micro tonal instruments add colour and a primitive freshness. Everyone’s freedom and pleasure are guaranteed.

The Junkestra has been featured in Toronto at Harbourfront’s Big Bam Boom, Nuit Blanche, the Live Green Toronto Festival, The Symposium for Arts and Learning, and was recently awarded a grant with the South of 60 Gallery in Barry’s Bay, ON, for a hockey version of the Junkestra, which will, after its three week exhibit, live in the lobby of their arena  – inviting hockey players, their guests and families to explore sound, music and art – every day after the game. A joyful, collective of sport, art, music and environmental awareness is my dream, one which seems to be coming true!
